E211 Benzoate de sodiumThe additive E211 is a sodium salt of benzoic acid (E210), itself derived from benzene. The remarks made for benzoic acid apply by extension to sodium benzoate. Thus, the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) may be exceeded, especially in children who are heavy consumers of carrier foods (such as flavoured drinks). Hypersensitivity and allergy reactions have also been noted (asthma, pruritus, redness). This preservative is finally suspected of promoting hyperactivity in children, alone or in combination with azo dyes.
