E951 Aspartame

E951 Aspartame"Aspartame is an intense synthetic sweetener whose sweetening power is about 200 times greater than sucrose. It is mainly used in products with reduced energy value or without added sugars. In 2013, the European Food Safety Authority (Efsa) judged that aspartame and its co-products were safe for human consumption at current levels of use, even for the most vulnerable populations. This opinion followed several decades of controversy. Indeed, aspartame is often associated with various adverse health effects (headaches, epilepsy, brain tumours...). More broadly, an opinion of the National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (Anses) on intense sweeteners, published in 2015, concludes that the available studies do not prove any interest of these additives on weight control or blood sugar control in diabetic subjects. At the very least, there is therefore no benefit to consuming intense sweeteners. Finally, recent studies investigate the link between the consumption of intense sweeteners and the disturbance of the intestinal flora, leading to a disturbance of glucose regulation. The degradation of aspartame leads to the production of phenylalanine. Products containing this sweetener should therefore be labelled ""contains phenylalanine"" and consumers suffering from phenylketonuria should avoid its consumption."
