E955 Sucralose

E955 SucraloseSucralose is an intense synthetic sweetener whose sweetening power is about 600 times greater than that of sugar. It is used in products with a reduced calorie content or without added sugars. In one of its opinions, published in 2015, the National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (Anses) concludes that the available studies do not prove that the consumption of sweeteners is of interest for weight control or blood sugar control in diabetics. At the very least, there is therefore no benefit to consuming intense sweeteners. Some studies even suggest that the consumption of these additives could promote weight gain. Thus in 2019, INRA researchers, in collaboration with the University of Adelaide in Australia, will reveal for the first time - in animals - an increase in glucose consumption by administering an acesulfame K-sucralose mixture, particularly in the brain and adipose tissue. Long-term consumption of a mixture of intense sweeteners at a dose equivalent to that absorbed daily by some people leads to profound and undesirable changes in glucose metabolism. Without being able to explain why at this stage, the phenomena observed are the same as those that occur during weight gain in obese people. Finally, recent studies have investigated the link between the consumption of intense sweeteners and a disturbance in the intestinal flora, responsible for various metabolic imbalances (impaired glucose regulation).
